Ours uses students who are skilled tradesmen to do all sorts of home improvement and landscaping projects without paying them for their time or materials. He also uses the services of an attorney who is one of his students without payment. He doesn’t pay them in money nor does he trade lessons / instruction for their services. Of course, people who fall for it think they’re going to be paid or rewarded in some fashion, and come to me in frustration when they don’t. (I’ve been a student there for about 10 years) What are your thoughts on this? Is this practice the norm at other schools?
This instructor owns a giant training facility with about 500 students in total. Of course, much of the work inside the facility was done by students who donated their time and materials.
According to various accounts, there never has been a trade or a discount on lessons.
The work being done by students is not teaching martial arts. It’s redoing bathrooms, carptentry, plumbing, landscaping, legal, financial, etc…. both at the instructor’s home and training hall.
