Central AC unit return fan comes on randomly…huh?

For YEARS the fan (for the return) comes on at a low speed at around 12:00pm-1:00pm during the summertime. Every day it does this. I’ve lived with it for years, but this year it has got to me.

I go to the thermostat and and turn the fan to “on” and I hear it pick up speed. I turn it back to auto and occasionally it will stop all together, but most of the time it returns to the “low” speed…which is blowing hot air.

I’ve changed the thermostat, and I’ve changed the fan itself. So it’s something between here and there….I’m no idiot on the home improvement and DIY front, but this has me doing some head scratching….HELP!!!??!?
I don’t think programming is the problem. This unit was born WAY before that technology…lol.

i failed to mention that the unit is around 25 yrs old….still going strong too…just a minor hiccup here and there.
