Does a vent pipe for a drain have to come straight out the roof or can it be vented to an outside wall?

My fiance and I are preparing to rent an apartment. Our landlady is a friend and she has given us permission to do home improvement projects on the apartment. The vent pipe for the bathroom and kitchen drain comes right up through the floor in the room that we would like to put our bed. The pipe is about 2 feet from an outside wall could I cut it off and elbow it to the outside wall, or does it need to go straight up through the roof?
@ Shanester good point.

@ Mark lol I don’t think we are talking about the same kind of vent. Pro-vent is a product for venting your rafter insulation I was talking about the vent for the drain pipe.
@ kippy yeah you are right.

I guess I’ll just have to live with the fact that the vent pipe comes up in an inconvenient place.
