Be Sure To Follow The Four P’s To Build A Shed!

Maybe to build a shed is one of the projects on your list. If it is, it is important to follow the four P’s if you wish to build it easily and efficiently.

1. PREPARATION

Your first step is to determine the size of a shed you want, and where to put it. Don’t put it in a very shady location under many trees as the sun and wind will help keep it dry. Be conscious of existing water. Don’t construct it in low-lying area that is wet. You don’t want the paint to blister, or the wood to rot because of excessive moisture. Also mold could develop. Be sure not to erect it over a septic system. For aesthetic purposes, sometimes people prefer to build the shed a good distance from the garage or house. This is unwise because it means having to walk farther than necessary to get or return a tool or other item. It is possible today to get plans for attractive sheds that won’t detract from the looks of the total property.

2. PLANS

You want to chose your plans wisely. It is possible to get step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions, drawings, and blueprints. You can obtain material lists which are complete so you won’t run out of something during the project which can be very frustrating. Free plans often leave a lot to be desired. You want complete tool, material, blueprint, and constructing information in language you can easily understand, especially if you are not an experienced carpenter. You want detailed illustrations to be sure you are building it correctly. You may prefer to purchase pre-cut materials for easier constructing.

3. PERMIT

A lot of people think you do not need a permit for constructing a shed because of its usual small size. This is false. Your town’s or city’s code enforcement officer has to approve your plans before a permit is issued. He considers the size of the shed and which foundation is appropriate, whether skids, concrete blocks, or frost-proof for larger size sheds. It is also necessary to construct it so it is set back from the property line the proper number of feet. The roof has to be framed properly to prevent damage from snowfalls. If you neglect to obtain a permit, the code enforcement can force you to move your shed or dismantle it.

4. PATIENCE

You can build a quality shed at lower cost than a ready-made shed and if you have purchased the proper plans you can do it easily. One trait that is often common among woodworkers is not being satisfied unless the completed project is perfect. You want to enjoy your work, and an important thing to remember is not to judge you work compared to others. For one thing, your time might be more limited than others, and it is also a fact that individuals learn at different levels. Be satisfied with each accomplishment. The result may not be what you envisioned, but that is o.k. You will improve with each project. As Teddy Roosevelt once said, “I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is character.”
