Contractors, builders, handypersons…was this fair?

A couple of relatives agreed to do some home improvements for us. They laid new vinyl tile in my kitchen and adjacent laundry room and bathroom. They hung a new entry door, a new bedroom door enclosed my laundry room with a door/dry wall. They also hung a ceiling fan and installed some shelves. When we first discussed cost, they helped us estimate the price of materials (they were pretty close) and agreed that we would pay them the same as the cost of the materials. They explained that that was a pretty standard practice and they knew what the estimate for materials were. The cost of the materials came in $27 under what they estimated, but we rounded UP from the estimate and game them $30 MORE than the estimate.

Here’s the thing…it took them about a month to complete these projects (many days they were only here for an hour or two), so I got the feeling like they felt like they were short changed. Does it sound like I was fair?
