How do you dig holes in Georgia dirt?

I am trying to do some “basic” landscaping in my backyard. However, I am having a very hard time digging the holes for my trees. The “dirt” appears to be mostly red rocks/harden clay. Any tips on hand tools or methods that can ease the job?!? I would like to avoid a backhoe if possible.
